Pearcasso Contest Winners!
Congratulations to the 2011 Pearcasso First Place Winners! Clockwise from top left: Individuals - Ages 5-12 "Birds of Pearadise" by Karna (age 11); Individuals - Ages 13-18 "Life of a Seahorse" by Whitney (age 14); Groups - Ages 5-12, Mitchell Boys & Girls Club, Milwaukee, WI; Groups - Ages 13-18, King's Academy, Period B, Sunnyvale, CA
To enter the competition, kids submitted realistic or fanciful artworks incorporating U.S. canned pears (or the pear graphic posted on the contest site). Entrants decorated their pears according to the whims of their inner Pearcasso, then photographed the finished work and posted it on the
Eat Canned Pears Facebook page. The contest was open to all kids in two age categories - 5-12 and 13-18 - and in individual and group entries.
Group prizes - first ($500), second ($250) and third ($100) - and individual prizes - first ($100), second ($50) and third ($25) - were awarded in each of the four age categories, with the prize winners taking home SmileMakers®, Inc. gift certificates for art and school supplies.
Children learn by touching, tasting, feeling, smelling, and listening
They love to help prepare food and cook because they can use all their senses. Even better, they like to eat the foods they make. When planning menus, always remember to consider the age of the child/children.
Important Points To Remember
Help children wash their hands before cooking.
Announce they must wait until the dish is done before sampling.
Expect spills and messes.
Give children quick, simple jobs, and instructions one at a time.
Repeat directions as often as needed.
Remember young cooks need constant supervision.
Assign children jobs to help with cleanup.
Make Fun, Fruity Pizzas Together!
Recipe:
Low-fat mozzarella cheese slices (1 slice per child), prepared tomato sauce, English muffins or pita bread, 1/4 cup canned pear dices.
Method:
Split the English muffins/pitas into two halves. Give each child one-half English muffin or pita, and help him/her spread tomato sauce and place a slice of cheese on the "pizza." Toast the muffins until the cheese melts. Have each child top his/her muffin with diced canned pears.
